Beloved Father, Grandfather, and Great Grandfather


John George Sully of Westfield, NJ passed away at his home on May 20. Born on July 6, 1922, in Newark, NJ, he was the only child of Katharine and George Sully. On January 26, 1946, he married Patricia Stevens in Southington, CT. She predeceased him in 2014.

He was a graduate of The Lawrenceville School and earned a BA at Princeton University where he played varsity hockey and baseball. He served in WWII in the 414 Infantry 104th Division in Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe, and was awarded 3 purple hearts and 2 bronze stars. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge.

He was co-founder of the Westfield Grasshopper and Hedgehopper baseball league for 8 and 9 year olds.

Jack spent his entire working career at Continental Insurance Company in New York, San Francisco, and Piscataway, NJ.

He was a major sports fan and enjoyed working in the yard at his homes in Westfield, NJ and Brewster, MA. He was long time member of Echo Lake C.C. and The First Congregational Church where he helped write the church history and served as moderator.

He leaves behind a daughter, Jacquelyn Jennett (Jim) of Dobbs Ferry, NY, a son, John Sully (Jayne) of Orleans, MA., two granddaughters, Heather Jennett and Brooke Jennett Koch (Robert), and 3 great-grandsons, Rowan James Sponberg, Hayden Patrick Sponberg, and Alden James Koch.

A memorial service will be held at the First Congregational Church on Saturday, June 10th at 3:30 p.m. Arrangements are by Gray Funeral Directors, Westfield, NJ.
